Biogas Milk Chilling

SNV is a non-profit international development organisation established in the Netherlands in 1965. For over 40 years, SNV has been at the forefront of development, helping to build local capacity and empower local families and communities to break the cycle of poverty. We are present on the ground in 36 developing countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Balkans and operate in Agriculture & Food Security, Renewable Energy, and Water, Sanitation & Hygiene. Our 900 advisors in the field come from a variety of cultural and technical backgrounds, and over 60 per cent are nationals of the countries where we work.
In Africa, SNV has been involved in promotion and dissemination of domestic biogas from 2007 onwards, whereby our support has been both in the framework of larger initiatives (Africa Biogas Partnership Programme (ABPP II) and singular country programmes (Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Benin, Cameroun).
In these programmes, the linkage between small scale biogas and small scale dairy has always been tight. From a biogas point of view the –often zero stabled- dairy cows are an easy producer of the substrate for the biogas installation. From a dairy perspective, the importance of a biogas installation included the proper and hygienic management of cow dung and the production of energy for hot/warm water to clean milking equipment and cattle before and after milking, while the application of bioslurry (the liquid residue of the biodigester) as organic fertilizer can contribute to improved production of cattle fodder. To a lesser extent, biogas-energy has been applied for on-farm milk processing, mainly pasteurizing raw milk.
A 'disturbing hiatus' in the dairy-biogas relation has been the virtual absence of productive application of biogas in chilling of milk. Although at hobby-scale some smaller initiatives are known, proper R&D, let alone any proper device, is absent. Currently, there are no solutions available in the market that provide milk chilling (a.) at micro-scale, below 300 litres per cycle and (b.) that run independently from the grid.
To support development of micro biogas milk-chilling equipment, SNV will participate in a larger consortium for biogas milk chilling, including innovation incubators, R&D organizations, milk chilling experts and biogas experts. Within the framework of this consortium, SNV will invest in R&D, field testing and subsequent market introduction of this new technology. SNV's participation will include three countries (Tanzania, Kenya and Zambia) for the duration of 2 years, starting the first of January 2014.
SNV seeks to employ a Junior Advisor Biogas Milk Chilling, to support product R&D, market research, field testing, and market introduction in the three countries. The Junior Expert will be stationed in Arusha, Tanzania, and report directly to the Tanzania Renewable Energy Sector Leader. The Junior Expert will be supported by the regional senior biogas advisor. Frequent traveling to Kenya and, in a later stage, Zambia will be required.
Responsibilities
- Assist the consortium in the formulation of the product requirements and design parameters;
- Design and support implementation of market studies for micro milk chilling in the countries and analyse / develop the 'business case' for the new product;
- Design and support implementation of the field testing of the biogas milk chilling (BMC) prototypes in coordination with local partners;
- Establish market linkages including key stakeholders (dairy and biogas private sector, farmers associations, microfinance agencies) and design and support implementation of the BMC marketing strategy;
- Develop and implement the project planning and monitoring framework;
- Provide technical backstopping to both the country projects and the consortium, assuring coordination between all parties involved, and close follow-up with country-based advisors.
- Provide on-the-job technical assistance and advise to partners, local service providers (LCBs, consultants) and clients in the project.
- Deliver quality information briefs and reports as input for knowledge development and sharing, while contributing in workshops and events to disseminate results and lessons learned.
- Support establishment and maintenance of networks with relevant stakeholders at local, national and international level.
- Support day-to-day management of the project, project operational plans, project budgets, budget depletion and reporting, in close coordination with the RE sector leader.
- Contribute to strategic renewable energy sector positioning, improving relevance, efficiency and effectiveness of current and new SNV interventions in the RE sector, contributing to increased funding opportunities, actively supporting proposal development.
Candidate profile
Professional background
- Academic level of engineering, specialization in energy, design or thermodynamics is an advantage;
- Affinity / experience in technological innovation and setting up field tests in renewable energy and with dairy sector;
- Affinity / experience in private sector development, product development, process facilitation and pro-poor growth approaches, taking into consideration social inclusion, gender and sustainability;
- Affinity / experience in project design and project management;
- Affinity with rural development in Africa.
Desired Skills and Attitude
- Good communication skills (verbal and written) in English. Kiswahili will be an asset;
- Innovative, entrepreneurial, business oriented;
- Leadership, coaching and self-reflection skills;
- Very good analytical skills combined with a practical and pragmatic approach oriented towards lasting results;
