POSITION DESCRIPTION: Marketing & Programs Coordinator

The Mission of the Maasai Girls Education Fund is to improve the literacy, health, and economic well-being of Maasai women in Kenya through education of girls and their communities. 

The Maasai Girls Education Fund (MGEF)—www.maasaigirlseducation.org—is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington DC, working in partnership with a Community Based Organization (CBO) in Kajiado, Kenya. MGEF was founded in 2000 by Barbara Shaw who was first inspired to personally sponsor the education of one Maasai girl. As of November 2013, MGEF has enabled 130 girls to attend school. In 2006, MGEF launched its Community Education Program which organizes workshops to address the cultural barriers to girls’ education, and more than 7,000 girls, boys, women and men have participated. 

The position of Marketing and Program Coordinator is an essential role, charged with publicizing MGEF programs, generating and tracking awareness of MGEF through social media, managing MGEF’s website content, collating data from MGEF programs and scholarships, managing MGEF email databases, assisting with the identification of grant opportunities and grant writing, participating at non-profit informational events, assisting with communications to donors and management of donations, and communicating with the Kajiado CBO in a culturally appropriate and effective manner.

The Coordinator will work in the Washington DC office and report to the Executive Director. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in performing the responsibilities associated with this position, a solid understanding of new media, marketing techniques and the use of emerging technologies to effectively build new audiences, evidence of passion for girl’s education and the empowerment of women, and experience working in East Africa or working with organizations in East Africa. Previous experience working with the Maasai is of particular interest.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Web and Social Media 
• Maintain and update website and social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, and LinkedIn
• Track and expand followers of MGEF on social media platforms 
• Create and regularly update content for social media pages, website and MGEF blog, including photo/quote overlays, event highlights, announcements and articles relevant to MGEF’s mission
• Stay abreast on best practices in social media, and analyze and update website to improve its reach to target audiences
• Manage list of journalists and bloggers with expressed interest in girls education and the Maasai people
• Identify and attend workshops and webinars with content specific to MGEF work

Fundraising
• Develop content and layout, and distribute, e-newsletters to MGEF followers, potential donors and foundations
• Communicate with current and potential donors
• Network with like-minded organizations and grant-making institutions, and represent MGEF at non-profit informational events 
• Assist with identification of grant opportunities, writing of grants and periodic grant reports, and tracking of deadlines for grant proposals and periodic reports 

Scholarships and Programs
• Track, obtain and summarize data for MGEF scholarships, workshops, surveys and the women’s business training program
• Write and update students biographies for website
• Maintain an up-to-date folder of statistics related to girls education
• Maintain a collaborative relationship with the Kajiado office and work with Kajiado office to obtain and track scholarship and programs information 

Administrative
• Organize, print and file office documents
• Field incoming phone, email and internship inquiries
• Manage ordering of office supplies 
• Maintain technology in working order, troubleshoot technology and equipment issues
• Provide assistance for board meetings and for meetings with donors and foundations

OTHER INFORMATION
Requirements
• 4-year degree, preferably with emphasis in marketing, English, journalism or African studies
• Facility with excel, Microsoft word, video editing, website development and social media platforms
• 1-3 years’ experience with many or most of the job responsibilities

Position Details
• Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
• Hours: Full time position
