BBC Media Action’s mission is to inform, connect and empower people around the world. For this mission to be realised in Tanzania, building capacity of local community radio stations is key.
Through BBC Media Action Tanzania’s projects, 24 community radio stations have received direct training, 10 of which have received more intense long-term support through a mentoring model. Training and mentoring has focused on developing key journalism skills, effective radio station management, improving programme output and audience engagement.
Private Sector Mapping for 10 community radio stations
Radio is the primary source of information for 90% of Tanzanians, yet community radio stations struggle to survive. The main challenges faced by these radio stations link back to inadequate funding and sporadic revenue sources. While larger commercial stations are able to quote compelling reach figures, community radio stations struggle to attract advertisers. As such the sustainability of their organisations is at risk.
Purpose:
A consultant is needed to map the private sector surrounding the 10 primary partners radio stations for BBC Media Action, Tanzania to be completed before 30 January 2014.
Guided by discussions with BBC Media Action and partner radio station staff, they will:
- map the private sector environment within the reach of each of the 10 primary partner radio stations
- develop a database for each radio station that contains relevant information about the local private sector including the name and size of the businesses, location, current media strategy/usage, advertising budget, current advertising partnerships and criteria for considering new partnerships.
